Supplementary health insurance.
Made easy.
Keep the strength of statutory health insurance and add cover where it matters to you. Dental bills, hospital comfort, selected alternative treatments and healthcare abroad can all leave gaps in your main policy. Unconfuse helps you understand those gaps and connect with a suitable specialist partner, so you can choose the extras that fit your life and budget.

THE GAPS
Why add supplementary cover?
GKV pays for the care included in its statutory benefit rules. It does not cover every material, practitioner, room choice or treatment abroad. Supplementary insurance can help with a specific gap while you keep your existing health provider. You can choose one area or combine suitable tariffs—there is no need to buy every extra.
More choice
Choose the dental materials, hospital comfort or specified additional services you value. The policy defines which choices it pays for.
A clearer budget
Compare a regular premium with the costs you would otherwise pay yourself. Deductibles, benefit limits and future premium changes still matter.
Cover that fits
Start with what your main policy already includes. Add benefits around your priorities, health needs and travel plans, with advice when you need it.
FOUR AREAS TO EXPLORE
Choose the extras that matter to you
Explore the gap, the benefits and the budget in each area. These are starting points for a comparison; the right tariff depends on your circumstances.
Dental cover
GKV helps with standard dental care, but implants, premium crowns and some fillings can leave a sizeable share for you to pay. A dental tariff can give you more room to choose the treatment and materials you want.
- Help with crowns, bridges and implants, within the tariff’s reimbursement limits.
- Contributions towards professional cleaning and selected dental treatments.
- Options for higher reimbursement; GKV payments usually count within the advertised percentage.
Around €13–€60 a month
Depending on age and level of cover
Check existing or planned treatment, missing teeth and the reimbursement scale in the first years. Age and the level of cover affect the price.
Hospital cover
GKV covers medically necessary hospital treatment. A hospital tariff adds agreed choices around your stay, such as a quieter room or private doctor treatment, so you can choose the comfort and service that matter to you.
- Single or twin room, depending on the tariff and hospital availability.
- Private doctor treatment and agreed specialist fees within policy limits.
- Broader clinic choices where covered; check private clinics and fees above standard rates.
Around €30–€40 a month
Selected tariffs at entry age 30
This published range is for selected tariffs with age-related reserves at entry age 30. Other ages and benefits can cost more. Check health questions and waiting periods.
Outpatient supplementary cover
Some treatments by Heilpraktiker practitioners and some complementary therapies sit outside standard GKV cover. An outpatient supplementary tariff may help with the cost of the specific services you choose to use.
- Selected Heilpraktiker services within the accepted fee schedule.
- Osteopathy, acupuncture or other named therapies where the policy includes them.
- Some packages also include glasses or additional check-ups; compare the complete benefit list.
Around €10–€50 a month
Depending on age and level of cover
Check annual limits, reimbursement percentages and eligible practitioners. Cover is not a guarantee that a treatment is effective or suitable; discuss that with a qualified clinician.
Travel health cover
Travelling out of Germany or welcoming visitors here calls for the right travel policy. Outgoing cover fills healthcare gaps abroad; incoming visitor cover can provide the insurance evidence needed for a qualifying short-stay visa.
- Outgoing: eligible treatment abroad and medical return transport under the policy rules.
- Incoming: visitor cover for the agreed dates and countries, with the required visa certificate.
- Check Schengen requirements, trip length, exclusions and existing medical conditions.
Incoming: around €1.20–€2.50 a day
Outgoing: €10 single-trip example / €25 annual example
These are selected provider examples with different terms, not equivalent packages. Schengen cover is generally not enough for a national visa or ongoing residence.
TRAVELLING IN OR OUT
Match the policy to the journey
Leaving Germany
Your European Health Insurance Card gives access to necessary state-provided care in participating countries under local rules. It does not cover private care or repatriation. Outside that system, GKV protection can be much more limited. An outgoing travel health policy can help with these gaps, subject to its terms.
Check the maximum length of each trip, worldwide or regional cover, existing conditions and whether return transport is covered when medically sensible as well as medically necessary. Buy before departure and keep the emergency number with you.
Visiting Germany
For a short-stay Schengen visa, travel medical insurance generally needs to cover the whole Schengen area and the full stay, with at least €30,000 of cover and the required emergency-treatment and repatriation benefits. Ask for a certificate that matches your application.
For a national visa or a longer stay, requirements are different. Visitor travel cover may bridge the period until GKV or suitable private cover begins, but it should not be assumed to replace ongoing comprehensive insurance.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
Check the small print once. Choose with confidence.
What is included?
Look at reimbursement percentages, fee schedules, annual caps and the first years’ benefit limits. Check whether GKV’s payment is included in an advertised percentage.
When does it start?
Health questions, waiting periods and exclusions can apply. Treatment already advised, planned or started is often excluded. Arrange cover before a problem becomes a known bill.
What will you pay?
Compare the premium, deductible and any costs above the tariff’s limits. Ask how premiums can change with age and over time, and whether you can keep the cover affordable.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Supplementary health insurance FAQs
Do I have to change my
health provider?
Usually not. A private supplementary tariff can sit alongside GKV, subject to its eligibility rules. You keep your statutory membership and use the extra policy for its agreed benefits. Check the membership requirements before applying.
Will it pay every
new co-payment?
No. A reform does not automatically expand a policy. Prescription or hospital co-payments are covered only where the tariff expressly includes them. Check each benefit rather than assuming all new charges are insured.
Can I buy it after
treatment is recommended?
Often that treatment will be excluded, even if the tariff has no general waiting period. Tell the provider about existing advice and cost plans, and ask for written confirmation before relying on cover. Initial benefit limits can still apply.
Do privately insured people
need it too?
First check your PKV benefits: dental, hospital or complementary treatment may already be included. Travel gaps can still arise. Supplementary policies may be restricted to GKV members, so check eligibility and avoid paying twice for the same benefit.
